Published at LXer: Setting up a firewall for IPtables can be rather difficult, especially if its your first time. A firewall is something you need to have, whether you are just trying to keep hackers out, or trying to meet a requirement such as PCI compliance, or HIIPA compliance.

Dear Ubuntu users, I have installed and for some time using Lucid Linx with great pleasure. I am spending time searching for the best application in various fields to make my Ubuntu more complete and functional. Here is a list of these that are not present in the default Ubuntu installation that I found as most contemporary and useful at this time.

The list of domains is all well and good, but what firewall products allow DNS entries with wildcards? How does one go about determining the IP address list required when there’s no hostname?

It should be noted that the Windows Server 2008 firewall MUST be enabled when adding the RDP role. This is because it will try to modify the Windows Server firewall rules to allow in the inbound connections to RDP services. If the firewall is disabled then the install will simply fail

hi all, I posted this in Networks but have had little luck in that forum lately… I haven’t been able to connect via ssh to my media server at home. It’s running Karmic (non-server version) and has sshd installed

I would have given 5 stars for this product but one very important bit of functionality did not work and is not supported by the device – that is, Windows VPN Client. When I need to connect to the VPN at my place of work I have to use Window VPN client – but the Prosafe FVS318G does not supported. Netgear technical support is USELES. If I’d beeen able to reach a tech person there I might have been able to figure out a solution, though most of what I found on the Internet supported the fact that Windows VPN client doesn’t work with the device. I had to return this device for that reason. Apart from that it’s a good device.

Before I owned this FVS318G, I had the FVS318 (no G). I upgraded because the G model offers way more speed. The older 318 has a WAN port that is only rated for 10 megs, so my cable connection which is rated at 25 megs was severely restricted. The older 318 also had LAN ports rated for 100 megs, while the G models are rated at 1000 meg. After switching to the G model my DL speed from the internet went from 7 megs to 23 megs!
As for the router itself, setup was fairly easy. It is administered via internet explorer or any web browser. I never had to look at the manual, and I was able to setup my 4 computer LAN with port forwarding in about 15 minutes. It has many features that I dont use such as VPN. It has been running for a month without any problems. The previous 318 ran for about 5 years without any problems (except the restriction in speed.) I do recommend this product.

You won’t find any 8 port gigabit router in this price range. Purchased 3 for work. Works great. If you want to set it up in somewhat transparent mode in a work environment where there is another dhcp server then don’t connect the wan port. Connect the regular lan to one of the normal ports not the wan.
